What causes sciatica

True sciatica is caused by a disc herniation in the lumbar spine that compresses a nerve root, causing radicular symptoms to the legs. However, not all leg pain is caused by a disc herniation. Most commonly, a misalignment or dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint can refer pain to the leg that mimics true sciatica. This is often overlooked by most providers and looks normal on an x-ray and MRI. Just because you have a disc herniation, doesn't always mean it's the cause of your pain!! A detailed history and examination at Melilli Chiropractic and Rehab Center can provide and accurate diagnosis and appropriate conservative treatment.
